The following are some side effects of Aleve.

1. Aleve causes gastrointestinal problems

Aleve contains naproxen which is its active ingredient. Use of Aleve drugs in patients may also cause heartburn. Other serious gastrointestinal effects of Aleve drugs include peptic ulceration, allergic sialadenitis and eosinophilic colitis. Peptic irritation may be asymptomatic. It is advisable for the patient to undergo occasional monitoring of hematocrit levels.

Most people who are at the risk of gastrointestinal side effects are those who are alcoholic. Thereforre, Aleve drugs should be used with caution in alcoholic patients.

2. Abnormality of the nervous system

Aleve drug intake have also been reported to cause abnormal functioning of the nervous system. Some of the abnormal side effects that are Aleve-induced include dream abnormalities, depression, aseptic meningitis, inability to concentrate, insomnia, malaise and muscle weakness.

3. Renal side effects

It includes the development of mild renal insufficiency and acute renal failure. This failure is due to tubulointerstitial nephritis and acute tubular necrosis. Renal failure can also be caused by hypersensitivity.

4. Cardiovascular side effects

The Aleve drugs elevate the blood pressure. This is caused by the naproxen that is used to manufacture Aleve. The elevated blood pressure may increase the risk of initiating antihypertensive therapy.

5. Hematologic side effects

This side effect has reportedly resulted to platelets dysfunction. This causes increase in bleeding times, eosinophilia, decrease hematocrit and granulocytopenia. Is Aleve a blood thinner? 6. Hypersensitivity

7. Respiratory side effects

Aleve drugs have also been reported to cause some respiratory complications such as fever, respiratory symptoms and malaise. Rare cases of eosinophilic pneumonia have also been observed.

8. Dermatologic side effects

Patients receiving a controlled formulation of naproxen, an active ingredient of Aleve, may also suffer from skin eruptions. With excessive exposure to the sun, the skin may erupt and resemble porphyria cutanea tarda. Aleve drugs are also associated with photosensitivity reactions.

9. Hepatic side effects

This side effect is associated with the functioning of the liver. Aleve drugs elevate the function of the liver three times the normal functioning. It is advisable to have regular liver function test in patients who suffer from liver disease. The side effect can lead to jaundice and hepatitis.

10. Metabolic side effects

Use of Aleve drug has also been associated with other metabolic complications. The metabolic side effects that are associated with Aleve drugs include hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.
